What are SMS Messages?

The noted social scientist said that the world has become a global village. Nothing illustrates this better than the emergence of the mobile phone. A century ago, the wireless radio, the telephone and the cable made possible the act of communication, by sending and receiving of messages. Today a SMS message takes am couple of seconds to reach a mobile phone, anywhere in the world through the magic of undersea cables, satellite transmission and local cell towers. This is a vast improvement from the traditional methods of messenger, pigeon post, sea mail, and the ubiquitous postman.
It is a vastly different world where your trusty mobile phone becomes your best communication medium in times of festivities, family occasions like birthdays, wedding days, anniversaries and emergencies. It takes a few seconds to write and a second to send it. Lovers, young and old, find it useful because the messages remain private and 'for your eyes only' with none being aware about it. It seems perfect that the I Love You message you send reaches the intended destination straight and true like an arrow. Of course, if the recipient's phone number is a wrong number, you have had it.
SMS messages can be short and sweet, or as long as you like, the only limitation being that they do not exceed 150 characters. When this happens, the message is split up and sent as separate messages of 150 characters each. Book publishers have appreciated this and are sending best sellers via SMS to interested book lovers. Some SMS messages can bring the senders lots of prizes through contests, sweepstakes and lucky predictions.
SMS messages are cheap because mobile phone providers offer the facility either for free or at a low price. Associations, professional organizations, social welfare societies like the Lions and Rotary Clubs, welcome the facility of sending SMS messages announcing upcoming meetings, membership arrears payment dates, payment due alerts and acknowledgements of fee and subscription payments received.
Schools, colleges and other educational institutions find it useful to send short communications of impending semester dates, examinations and results as well as fee payment due alerts to students and their parents. The students and parents appreciate the relevant information in the messages.
Credit card companies, banks and financial institutions and marketing companies are able to generate new business from existing consumer database by using this medium to remind customers of payment or renewal dates, new offers available, or as a means of addressing customer complaints.
And laughing all the way to the bank are the mobile service providers, who earn a windfall amount in additional revenue by splitting the premium SMS message call charges with the companies.

SMS Text Messaging for Easy, Targeted and Responsive Online

It is no secret that advertising is not trusted that much by consumers. Sure, it works, but what is the response rate? Banner ads are lucky to score a 1% click-through rate nowadays. And even then, the person who clicks through walks in cautious. They do not trusting that the advertiser speaks in the best interest of consumers. Ads have poor click-through ration and low sales conversion ratio of about 3-7%. So what is the solution?
Easy. Have the consumer market to the consumer. When your friend tells you 'hey, you should buy this product, its great!' you are highly likely to believe him and likely to consider buying it. When an advertiser tells you the same, you may not even hear the message ' you have learnt to block out ads unconsciously. You probably equate them to noise.
While click-through ratios of ads are about 1% or so, friend-to-friend recommendations can have a click through as high as 64%, according to a survey I once saw some time back. And what about sales conversion ratios? Well, direct marketers have known for years that an endorsed ad can convert as much as 30% or more.
There are many ways to get people to tell their friends about your products and services. Many web sites now have recommend-to-a-friend links. These use email to get a person to send the recommendation to a friend. That is good, but not enough. Have one of those; but also have something else. We now need a method that is novel so that the person can feel a thrill when they send a recommendation to a friend. We also need a method that is more instantaneous than email, and one more personal than email. What is that method?
It is SMS text messages. SMS text messages are those short 160 character text messages that you can send from your mobile phone to another mobile phone. It is like email through mobile phones. You can send any text to any phone. Before we look at how to send SMS text recommendations from your web site to people's friend's phones, let us briefly look at how popular SMS is. Here we go: There are over 750 million mobile phone users worldwide. Contrast that with about 500 million email users only. Out of the 750 million, about 550 million can send and receive SMS text messages on their phones. That is bigger than the email market! And it is growing faster than email or the web. There are about 18 billion SMS text messages sent per month worldwide. SMS is now the biggest profit generator for telecom companies around the world and it has a higher usage rate than voice calls especially in the consumer market. SMS may not be as big in the USA as it is in the rest of the world, but it ! is growing rapidly even there. OK, now here is where it gets real good for you: you can send an SMS text message from your web site to any phone anywhere on this good planet called earth for less than $0.05 per message! Anywhere on earth! The cost is the same whether you send one to your neighbor or to a guy in Vladivostok. And it will instantly reach the recipient wherever they are. It will not get lost in some big email inbox and probably get deleted. No, it will be read when it gets there, given full attention. At $0.05 a message, that is about $50 for a thousand messages. You can get this figure down if you send in bulk. At less than $50 CPM, it costs less than many banner ads or ezine ads, and you get to contact people in an instant, very personally!
So what is the idea? Well, what you need to do is have a short form on your web site, on each page of your web site, inviting people to send a free SMS to their friend about your site. Of course, so that they do not go about sending their own messages that have nothing to do with your site, you would pre-write your advert and make it unavailable for change by the site visitor. So all you ask your visitors for is their mobile phone number and their friends' mobile phone numbers. That is all. When they enter this in your form on your web pages and click send, a script sends your pre-written ad to their friend. Of course, you have to write it in a 'friendly' manner so that it does look like a 'personal recommendation' to the recipient. You can show the sender what the outgoing message will be but don't allow them to change it or else they will just type in their own personal story about the dog at home ' at it will still cost you $0.05. It is that simple.
Many people love to send and receive SMS messages so this is a very fresh and engaging way for you to advertise. And you know you are hitting the right target because most people will not recommend something to their friend unless they like it and know their friend will like it. So you pay for good targeting. You also get good response because people trust their friends more than they trust you. So do remember to ask the sender for their mobile phone number because that is how the receiver will know that it came from them. You may also ask them for their first name and their friend's first name and insert them in the pre-written recommendation you send out.
Now all you need is to implement this. What you need is a company that has set up a 'SMS gateway' that has worldwide roaming. Open an account with them. You then send your SMS messages to that company and they will transmit it for you. It is all done easily via scripts. Some of the best companies out there for this are Simple Wire and Deltica (see http://www.imagesofone.com/articles/reviews.asp for updated links to gateway companies and service providers). These companies will give you a starter kit that includes sample code that you can modify to implement what we talked about. You can implement this easily if you have some experience with CGI scripts or perhaps ASP or PHP. If you don't, you can get someone to do it for you at www.elance.com for a small fee.
What have you just done? You have enabled your consumers to talk to each other about you in the most personal and rapid way. This is where the future of marketing lies. And you can get in on it right now. I wish you all the best and hope to get an SMS from your site one day.

SMS Gateways - SMS Gateway providers

SMS gateway providers facilitate SMS traffic between businesses and mobile subscribers, including mission-critical messages, SMS for enterprises, content delivery, and entertainment services involving SMS, e.g. TV voting. Considering SMS messaging performance and cost, as well as the level of messaging services, SMS gateway providers can be classified as aggregators or SS7 providers. The aggregator model is based on multiple agreements with mobile carriers to exchange two-way SMS traffic into and out of the operator’s SMSC, also known as local termination model. Aggregators lack direct access into the SS7 protocol, which is the protocol where the SMS messages are exchanged. SMS messages are delivered to the operator’s SMSC, but not the subscriber’s handset; the SMSC takes care of further handling of the message through the SS7 network.
Another type of SMS gateway provider is based on SS7 connectivity to route SMS messages, also known as international termination model. The advantage of this model is the ability to route data directly through SS7, which gives the provider total control and visibility of the complete path during SMS routing. This means SMS messages can be sent directly to and from recipients without having to go through the SMSCs of other mobile operators. Therefore, it is possible to avoid delays and message losses, offering full delivery guarantees of messages and optimized routing. This model is particularly efficient when used in mission-critical messaging and SMS used in corporate communications.

SMS Gateways - SMS message size

Transmission of short messages between the SMSC and the handset is done whenever using the Mobile Application Part (MAP) of the SS7 protocol. Messages are sent with the MAP MO- and MT-ForwardSM operations, whose payload length is limited by the constraints of the signaling protocol to precisely 140 octets (140 octets = 140 * 8 bits = 1120 bits). Short messages can be encoded using a variety of alphabets: the default GSM 7-bit alphabet, the 8-bit data alphabet, and the 16-bit UTF-16 alphabet. Depending on which alphabet the subscriber has configured in the handset, this leads to the maximum individual short message sizes of 160 7-bit characters, 140 8-bit characters, or 70 16-bit characters (including spaces). GSM 7-bit alphabet support is mandatory for GSM handsets and network elements, but characters in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese or Cyrillic alphabet languages (e.g. Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc.) must be encoded using the 16-bit UTF-16 character encoding (see Unicode). Routing data and other metadata is additional to the payload size.
Larger content (concatenated SMS, multipart or segmented SMS, or “long SMS”) can be sent using multiple messages, in which case each message will start with a user data header (UDH) containing segmentation information. Since UDH is part of the payload, the number of available characters per segment is lower: 153 for 7-bit encoding, 134 for 8-bit encoding and 67 for 16-bit encoding. The receiving handset is then responsible for reassembling the message and presenting it to the user as one long message. While the standard theoretically permits up to 255 segments, 6 to 8 segment messages are the practical maximum, and long messages are often billed as equivalent to multiple SMS messages. See concatenated SMS for more information. Some providers have offered length-oriented pricing schemes for messages, however, the phenomenon is disappearing.
